I'll buy the lack of minutes argument... but not the lack of talent argument. The 90's are over. There are more then 4 talented teams.

I'll buy the lack of minutes argument... but not the lack of talent argument. The 90's are over. There are more then 4 talented teams. Really? Back in the 90's there was really only one team that mattered. How many teams have real talent now? The US, Spain, Argentina, and France definitely have solid teams. After that, it gets a little more murky (and Yi played only one of those, only other teams that made the knockout round that he played were Italy, Greece, and Slovenia). Yugoslavia has a real team when all their guys show up, which doesn't happen much anymore. China has Yao and Yi, but doesn't really do any damage, and the same goes for Germany despite Dirk. The other teams have maybe a couple of decent players and aren't really a factor outside of occasionally upsetting the US. There are still an awful lot of countries that get blasted by the real teams. Most important, against the USA, Yi played 24 minutes. He had 13 points on 5-9 shooting, 7 reb, 1 ast, 2 blocks. But I guess the U.S. isn't good competition. The main thing is that he is still young and sitll improving. Wow, one decent game against a US team that still crushed them. Sign me up, let's take him over Oden! Vasileios Spanoulis dropped 22 on the US, we better take him #2! And Marchelo Vealy had 22 against Kansas, he'd be a steal at #3! Sorry, I had to get my sarcasm out of the way for the day. Maybe he's good, maybe he's just decent, it's hard to say because of who he normally plays against and the fact that many people haven't seen him play. That makes it hard to definitively say where he belongs in a very strong draft. Right now I'd say somewhere around #5, with maybe 2 spots of wiggle room to move up if he dominates workouts and the potential to drop a fair amount if he disappoints. I certainly wouldn't complain if we got him, but at this point in the process I wouldn't exactly be doing cartwheels either because he's one of the bigger unknown quantities. From what I've seen he looks pretty good, but so would a lot of guys in highlight clips in the Chinese league. Heck, Whang Zhi Zhi is one of the better big men in the league. |

Yugoslavia has a real team when all their guys show up, which doesn't happen much anymore. Well, 1st off, Yugoslavia doesn't exist anymore, it's Serbia now. 2nd, they have a very talented team. Bodiroga, Stojakovic, Krstic, Jaric, Milicic, Vujacic, Radmanovic, Pavlovic... 3rd, I am completely biased, and admittedly so. But you are right, the 2006 FIBA team was missing a lot of players, and before that, we were 2 time defending World Champs. |

Yeah, I thought is was Serbia and Montenegro, then I saw Yugoslavia come up on the FIBA site and got confused. They can definitely be dangerous with a full squad, they're easily a top-5 team at full strength and are probably as deep as anyone but the US. How about before you get sarcastic you know who has actually been drafted in the past. Vasileios Spanoulis was already drafted in 2004 and Houston obtained his contract rights. They then bought out his $6 million contract and signed him to a 3 year deal. I'm a big Rockets fan as well so that's why I know. Next time just stick to posting the last paragraph of your comment and maybe it will be sensible. I definately like it a lot more. Geez, I was just kidding, relax. My bad, I don't know the full history of a Greek guard with a career scoring average of 2.4. Vealy won't be in the draft either FWIW, only a sophomore. |
