Report: Bulls in talks for Fernandez
Paper says they have interest in Blazers' swingman

10:50 PM CDT, July 27, 2010

The Oregonian reported Tuesday night that the Bulls are among three teams engaged in trade talks with the Trail Blazers for swingman Rudy Fernandez.

Fernandez, long rumored to be available, also is being linked to talks with the Celtics and Knicks, the paper reported, citing Fernandez's agent, Andy Miller.

The Bulls still are seeking to add outside shooting for their 12th contracted player after witnessing an underwhelming workout from Tracy McGrady on Monday. The Bulls also have had conversations with representatives for shooting guards like Keith Bogans, Roger Mason Jr. and Eddie House, sources previously told the Tribune.

The Bulls have been offering 2009 first-round pick James Johnson all offseason, although the Trail Blazers have shown little interest in Johnson in the past and other parts would be needed to make those salaries match.

Fernandez, 25, has shot 38.7 percent from 3-point range in his two NBA seasons since leaving his native Spain.

Meanwhile, veteran coach Bernie Bickerstaff, who spent the last two seasons with the Bulls, has been named an assistant on Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan's staff.

Seems like it will happen quickly no matter where he lands...

"At the urging of Rudy Fernandez and his agent, the Trail Blazers have engaged in accelerated trade discussions to deal the disgruntled, once-popular shooting guard to one of three Eastern Conference teams.

Boston, Chicago and New York are all in the running to land the 6-foot-6 Spaniard, who set an NBA rookie record two seasons ago by making 159 three-pointers."

So how could the Bulls actually make the contracts work out? Steve? Suggestions?

I don't really know Portland's needs, but I know Przybilla was on the block in a Deng deal... so expand it.

Add picks coming from the Bulls if need be. This expands on the previous rumors.

Or, simplify the trade.

there is no way the bulls would trade taj for rudy. we would have a really solid guard rotation with him in the mix.

If the Bulls traded Taj Gibson for Rudy freaking Fernandez, that will be one of the worst trades this FO has ever done in recent history. There are no minutes for him here. Losing Taj means we have no backup PF and with Boozer's injury history that's a horrible idea. I pray that our FO isn't dumb enough to give them Taj.

Word is Rudy wants to return playing professionally in Spain. If Rudy didn't pan out for McMillan, I doubt he pans out for Thibs (if Thibs is the D first guy we expect him to be). I could see JJ and a future 1st being enough to land Rudy, but the market may not even be that high for him.

If the Bulls get him...great. If they don't....I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Batum/Fernandez/Przybilla & either Cunningham or Pendergraph for Deng/Gibson & a future 1st.

Bulls should be all over this one. I know we'd be giving up Deng & Taj who are both high quality players but this deal clears up future cap space while also giving us 2 young studs & another very nice defensive big man. The Bulls reportedly tried to trade Deng for Przybilla and someone last year so the deal makes sense. I know that the Blazers value Batum pretty high and righfully so but maybe Deng/Gibson & a 1st makes them willing to part with him.

I think Batum fits our system much better than Deng. Batum is a defensive player that is very unselfish. Him and Brewer on our team would be very nice. Plus Batum hits the 3 at a very nice %. He's not a chucker but he is an unselfish reliable shooter who would fit nicely in our system. I think he's capable of guarding 3's and 2's which is also a nice thing to have. He might even be able to play some 4 when we want to go small.

Noah/Przybilla/Asik/
Boozer/Asik
Batum/Korver
Rudy/Brewer/Korver/
Rose/Watson

If we make this deal I think we then go out and sign a backup 4 and we end our great offseason makeover.

This deal might not happen before the season but if Rudy stays on Portland during the 1st half (which doesn't seem likely at this point) I think a deal b/w the Bulls and Blazers becomes a lot easier b/c then they can add players like Kurt Thomas, Watson, Brewer, Korver into the mix and I'm sure they can find a package that works for the Blazers that includes Deng.

Put down the XBox controller. That deal is so insanely in the Bulls favor it's funny. We give them an overpaid SF for their young star SF who actually has range, and we give them a backup PF and a 1st for Rudy and a backup C?

The Blazers turned down the 4th overall pick for Batum. He's 21 and they love him.

Another thing that should be noted is Rudy can always leave and play for Spain, and has said more than once that he's tempted to go back there if he is not satisfied with how he fits in Portland. Rudy averaged 24 mpg as a Blazer and is unhappy about it, I don't see how he gets anywhere close to that if he comes to the Bulls. Even if he were to come here and play, at the end of the season if he isn't basically given the starting job or isn't given the minutes he thinks he deserves he'll just leave and we'll lose out on yet another 1st round pick and maybe James Johnson.

I think Portland has always liked Deng so I don't think they'd mind trading for him. I do agree that the deal was in the Bulls favor but they also would be getting 2 players that might not be with the team long term.

Deng/Taj/#1 for Batum is a might high payment even if Deng does get paid well. The changes of them keeping Rudy and Przybilla long term are not good so they might as well capitalize on it if they can. Maybe the Bulls could make the pot even better by adding another #1 or a 2nd rounder. But to think they are going to get a better deal for Rudy isn't likely even if they have to give up Batum. Batum is good but he's no superstar. Taj would fit in perfect as their backup 4. Deng would fit in perfect as the SF and they could land some picks in the deal.

As for Rudy not deserving 24mpg on the Bulls people need to stop with that talk. Rudy is much better than any SG currently on our team. He's a great shooter and passer. Sure he can improve defensively but I think under Tom T. he'd work on that and we'd be a much better all around team with him in the lineup b/c of the problems he causes on offense.

Better as what? A shooter? Yeah. But after that I beg to differ..

Career FG%

Brewer .521
Fernandez .406

*True* Shooting %

Brewer .571
Fernandez .569

PER

Brewer 15.8
Fernandez 14.4

PPG

Brewer 10.3
Fernandez 9.4

Rudy didn't even clip 40% from the field this year. Most people overlook the fact that Brewer can't shoot the 3, but he gets to the basket and finishes at the rim at a high % and it reflects in his FG%. As an offensive player you have two totally different players but Ronnie Brewer is the more efficient scorer and deserves to start. No need to bring up defense, that's pretty obvious who has the edge there. People overrate Rudy Fernandez like crazy, especially Portland (Which comes as no surprise because all they do is over-value their assets). He's an okay player but he's nothing special and there is nothing that would suggest to me that he deserves to start over Brewer.

I'm not arguing that Brewer is a good fit b/c I like him a lot. He's who I wanted the Bulls to draft but instead they took Thabo (Aka Swiss Chocolate). But what can't be overlooked is that Rudy has always been Roys backup and hasn't been given the consistent minutes to be more effective. He's a more capable offensive player than the numbers show bc he's basically only been a 3 point shooter in Portland and he's really never played with a great point guard (Miller) being the best. So I am pretty confident that playing with Rose he'd become a more dynamic player whereas Brewer has already played with Williams/Boozer so he'll be roughly he same guy unless he's serious about becoming a 3pt threat. I'm glad the Bulls got Brewer and Korver bit they could really use another 3pt threat and someone as talented offensively as Rudy. I truly think he's capable of averaging 18ppg if he gets 34+min.

Rose 20ppg
Boozer 20ppg
Rudy 18ppg
Deng 16ppg

That's the kind of offensive breakdown I want to see next year.
