Hornets sign 'top free-agent target' Peterson
ESPN.com news services

Updated: July 24, 2007, 12:51 AM ET

NEW ORLEANS -- Free agent guard Morris Peterson signed a four-year contract with the New Orleans Hornets on Monday after playing the first seven seasons of his NBA career with Toronto.

ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan reported on July 13 that Morris will get $23 million over the four years with a "trade kicker" included in the contract.

"I'm excited about getting a fresh start in New Orleans," Peterson told The Associated Press. "It's an opportunity to make history and be a part of a franchise on the rise. They faced a lot of adversity the last two years, and didn't complain."

"Coach [Byron] Scott is a guy who knows the game and has had success as a player and coach. He understands guys and has won championships on this level."

Peterson said the Hornets were the first team to call him when the free agency period began July 1. He traveled to Salt Lake City to meet with the Jazz two weeks ago and said Cleveland, New Jersey, Detroit, Miami and Toronto also showed interest.

The 6-foot-7, 220-pound Peterson, who can play shooting guard or small forward, has career averages of 12 points along with about four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

His production and playing time fell last season -- averaging 8.9 points and 21.4 minutes -- one season after career highs in scoring (16.8), rebounding (4.6), steals (1.3) and minutes (38) a game.

"Morris was our top free-agent target this summer, so this is an exciting day for the team and our fans," Hornets general manager Jeff Bower said in a statement. "He is a reliable veteran scorer who can stretch the defense with his 3-point range, which is exactly the role we were looking to fill."

After helping Michigan State win the 2000 national championship, Toronto drafted Peterson 21st overall. He averaged 14 points in his second and third NBA seasons and 12.5 in his fourth season.

New Orleans signed Peterson to a $15 million, three-year offer sheet in 2004 when he was a restricted free agent, but the Raptors retained him by matching the deal.

The Hornets are really looking like a solid team. Good inside-outside shooting with a strong defense presence down low in Tyson. They should have a great shot at making the playoffs next year.

PG- Chris Paul
SG- Mo-Pete
SF- Peja
PF- David West
C- Tyson
Bench- J. Wright, Cedric Simmons, Hilton Armstrong, Bobby Jackson

They will make the playoffs if Peja plays and is draining 3s. If not then theres not a chance they make it especially in that conference which is stacked.

Mo-Pete lost starting time on TORONTO... TORONTO!! Their guard play is less than spectacular and he couldn't get the full-time gig...

This contract was way too big...
