from espn.com:

"CHICAGO: F-infinity-minus
When the media guide for the No Balls Association is released, I demand that John Paxson appears on the cover. At some point, you have to roll the dice, right? Not landing Gasol was inexcusable; the Bulls could have made the Finals with him (and if it meant sacrificing Luol Deng, Ty Thomas and the Knicks' pick, so be it). Instead, they did nothing ... which means they overpaid Ben Wallace when they already had a younger version of him for two-thirds the money (Tyson Chandler), gave away Chandler AND J.R. Smith for an expiring contract (P.J. Brown) because they wanted a trading piece for the deadline, then never ended up making a freaking trade.

I mean ...

Where does that rank among the most bizarre/inexplicable/head-scratching game plans in recent NBA history? Near the top, right? And if that's not bad enough, Paxson should have sold high on the Knicks' pick in December -- once the Celtics, Bucks, Hawks and Nets started getting crushed by injuries and the Iverson/Philly situation fell apart, everyone and their brother could see a 35-win season for the Knicks coming. What was the purpose of holding on to that pick? Are we even sure Paxson is alive? Has anyone seen him in the past three months? If he's missing or dead, I apologize for the last three paragraphs
"

laugh.gif even when he is tearing apart my favorite team, Bill Simmons is still the best sports writer in the game. (FWIW he tore apart pretty much every team in the NBA too.)

Bill Simmons is great. I mean, I was completely fine without making a trade, but reading that entire article was just funny nonetheless.

Funny article, but I have to agree that giving up deng or gordon would have been a bad idea. I would have tried to package Hinrich, Brown and a pick for someone...But I guess Kirk's trade value wasnt high enough.

Well according to ESPN's John Hollinger, John Paxson is a borderline retard.

QUOTE
Chicago Bulls
The Bulls' lukewarm pursuit of Gasol was the defining moment of this year's deadline season. Supposedly they didn't want to give up Luol Deng because they didn't think Gasol was a guy who could put them over the top in the East. Really? You don't think replacing P.J. Brown with an All-Star might give you a leg up? And you don't want to trade Deng for a guy who is an All-Star because in two years he might become one? Help me out with the logic on that one.

I will never understand this. Because he can play the post and passes so well, Gasol was the one player in the entire league who could have helped them the most -- even more than Kevin Garnett, I would argue. If they paired Gasol with the Bulls' shooters like Kirk Hinrich, Ben Gordon and Andres Nocioni, Chicago's offense immediately would become one of the league's better ones, which is all this team needs because its defense is so strong.

Instead, the Bulls acted like they were doing Memphis a favor by agreeing to take him. Maybe John Paxson got too used to dealing with Isiah Thomas and didn't realize that the league's other GMs actually demanded fair offers. Whatever the case, he passed up a golden opportunity to position his team for a run at a title.

That is the most retarded bunch of drivel I have read in a long time. The guy obviously can't look past today to understand relatively simple things like salary cap issues, and with Deng gone and Noc hurt, they have no real 3 who can start.

You must not read much then. It's nothing more then an opinion, but at the very least he supports it. Tyson Chandler is a 2/3 priced younger version of big ben.... and we gave him and JR smith away for an expiring contract. All Summer the move was defended saying it was the prelude to a big deal that would occur prior to the deadline. No deal occured. Not even a small deal. And is not having a 3 that can start really that big and deal? (though Kryhapa can play the 3) As it stands we don't have a 4 that could start. The Bulls' stellar guard play can hide weakness at the three much easier then it might be able to at the 4.

I'm an admitted Bulls homer. I'm not to worried about the lack of deal because I have faith that our guys can beat anyone in the East in a 7 game series... but the Bulls had the pieces to make a deal that would make them locks for the championship in a weak east, and I can't fault an outside observer with no vested interest in the team for calling it like he sees it. huh.gif
