Boston Herald story

Power move by Paxson
By Mark Murphy/ NBA Notes
Sunday, July 9, 2006 - Updated: 12:06 AM EST

Now that Ben Wallace is ready to consume $15 million of Chicago’s salary cap space over each of the next four seasons, we’re not sure how general manager John Paxson can continue to build his intriguing roster.

But with reports out of Chicago having Paxson ready to bid for Seattle power forward Chris Wilcox -- and with Wallace and P.J. Brown already in place, that would make for quite the power axis -- you have to hand it to Paxson for his willingness to make changes.

And at the core of his moves, the past seven days also became known as the Week of the Whining Big Men, with the just-departed Tyson Chandler and Wallace all pausing to fire on their old teams.

Chandler, sent to the Hornets as part of the Brown deal, said of Bulls coach Scott Skiles: “There was never an understanding there by him. Never communication. It was like there were walls put up there I could never break through. That’s just the way it was.”

Wallace, the most offensively challenged star in the league since Dennis Rodman, pointed to, of all things, his minimal role in the Detroit offense as one reason for signing with the Bulls. Do you suppose Skiles is going to love this kind of reasoning from his new center?

“At times, it really frustrated me because teams would take advantage of the fact that I wasn’t involved in the offense,” Wallace said. “Guys would tell me, ’I won’t sit and guard you, you’re not getting the ball. I’m going to go here or there and try to bog your offense down.’ That was always frustrating. I probably expressed it more (to Pistons coaches) than they wanted to hear.”

As a career .418 free throw shooter, perhaps a shooting clinic would be in order before more demands are made.

Wow....I don't know we could could get Wilcox cap wise?

maybe backload his contract since PJ's comes off the books after next season?

If Pax can pull this off...can he walk on water as well?

First, he already walks on water, and can also turn it into wine.

The contract shouldn't be an issue, they can always just stay within the penalty and then PJ's comes off the books next season...

You're probably right with your assumption of J.R. Smith.

Barring a mult-player deal, or a three team trade, I see the Bulls giving up Sweetney in the package as well. If they are going ot commit to a long term deal with Wilcox I think that they part ways with Michael Sweetney since this is Sweetney's last year anyway. Otherwise I think they trade Malik Allen.

I just don't see how they don't get rid of a small forward (Khryapa), and a power forward in any trade they do to bring back another power forward. They are definately to deep at the SF position.

Tyrus Thomas, Wilcox, P.J. Brown, Tim Thomas next years first round pick (for Eddy Curry, Tyson Chandler, Antonio Davis). Looks like it might end up benefiting us more in the future. When we had both Tyson, Eddy and AD and were in the playoffs a few years ago people probably wouldn't have wanted to pull the trigger on this one. However, if the Wilcox trade happens and Wilcox develops into the player he can Paxon could be the smartest GM every.

To get him from seattle we will have to beat other peoples' offers.

They don't want our scrubs. They are holding out for one core talent. If JR smith and some salary dump isn't enough for them, and they are holding out for gordon/deng/noc, they will have to wait.

Our best chance is that nothing happens for a while with wilcox so seattle is willing to get less in return. If this carries on for another few weeks, that could be the case.

Right now, they are asking for an all-star calliber forward in return. Hopefully, if they can drop down to potential talent and quality reserves, we can get something done.

That would be a nice piece to the puzzle to have:

PG - K.Hinrich
SG - B.Gordon
SF - L.Deng
PF - C.Wilcox
C - B.Wallace

Bench:
Nocioni
Duhon
Thomas
Sefolosha
Allen
Luke S.
Khryapa

I don't think P.J. Brown would be part of the deal so that makes our depth even better. We would have a quality back up and in some cases two at every position (since P.J. and Wilcox can both play center)

Wow id go crazy if this actually happened....From reading on Seattle message boards the player they seem interested in most is Nocioni. Honestly with all our SF's and if we got Wilcox/Sweetney/Brown/Wallace I dont mind letting go of Nocioni although i know most of you probably want to keep him at all costs.

I would hate it too because I really started liking NOC in the playoffs. However, that would mean that Deng would be the starting SF and that he would finally be hands down the starting SF. I like that idea but I still would hate to lose NOC. Nocioni and Chandler were our two only real energy players. Give it 110% on all plays. If we lose them do we lose the toughness this team had. I know Wallace is a beast but who else provides that energy and enthusiasm.

Wallace
Wilcox
Deng
Gordon
Hinrich

(but didn't Paxson tell NOC to expect big things this summer. Maybe he was talking about being traded).
