A team source has confirmed that Al Harrington, citing a poor relationship with coach Don Nelson, has officially asked the Warriors to trade him.
Nellie benched Harrington in a preaseason game against Lithuania and Harrington refused to reenter when Nelson asked him to go back in. This is disastrous news for Harrington owners, as the fact that the feud is public means Nellie might not feel like playing him. Harrington came into the season saying he was ready to make it work, but he appears to be at the end of his rope with Nellie. Wait and see what happens Wednesday before doing anything drastic.

Within hours of hearing that Al Harrington had demanded a trade from the Warriors, the Bulls were rumored to step in and start negotiating, according to a source.
As witnessed last night, the Bulls simply have too many guards, and they appear to be talking about shipping Kirk Hinrich to Don Nelson, which makes sense. While Hinrich would likely shine for the Warriors, and Harrington owners would love to see him moved soon, a trade to the Bulls would then make the front court crowded and likely stifle the development Tyrus Thomas. I think trading Hughes for Harrington doesn't help us that much. Harrington's contract expires in 2010, but is smaller than Hughes's that season IIRC. Trading Hinrich for him takes what, 2 years off of the deal we're currently holding for Kirk and thus opens up about $20 million or so in additional space under the luxury tax...money that if we want, could be spent signing Gordon. Or otherwise, we'd be holding a $8 million contract expiring this offseason and like $25 million in contracts expiring when Wade hits FA, and so we'd have legitimately enough cap room to make a max contract run at Wade.

We'd still have to go into luxury tax territory for next season regardless if they did that since Harrington actually makes more money than Kirk. Considering that they could already be under that threshold in 2010 with Hughes and Gooden coming off the books (something like 36 mil in committed salaries/options that are likely to be picked up not counting Gordon or extensions to Tyrus and Thabo, with the luxury tax threshold likely to be somewhere around $75 mil) I don't think that really changes the thinking at all.

His contract definitely has value in 2010, but for basketball reasons that deal sucks. Hinrich is the only other player on the roster capable of playing the point, he has an actual role on the team. I don't know what the heck they'd do with Harrington, to me it's basically like adding another Larry Hughes. Sure, he has some ability, but we already have Deng, Tyrus and Nocioni at the forward spots. Taking minutes away from those 3 does nothing for me, he doesn't really add anything new to the team other than another forward that needs minutes. Yes, he's a bit better than Nocioni, but we don't really need four 30-minute forwards.

The Bulls don't need a 4 who is a poor rebounder.

I hate doing "theoretical trades", but could we throw in Thomas or Noah and pick up a draft pick?

They better get more than a draft pick for either of them, especially Tyrus. Honestly, no one on that team really thrills me outside of Ellis, and you're not going to get him anyways. I suppose I would take Maggette or Biedrins, but they're both overpaid (well, relative to his contributions Biedrins is a bit overpaid, relative to other big men he's a steal) and Maggette typically plays terrible defense.

This isn't the NFL. That would be a horrible move.

I proposed a Nocioni for Al Harrington deal in the summer, I'd do that. From what I hear, GS is only interested in Kirk and Thabo.

I don't really see how Harrington would help our team. We'd go from a crowded backcourt to a crowded frontcourt. And regardless, Hinrich does a lot more for this team than Harrington ever would.

If we make a trade, it has to be where we're trading more players than we're getting back in return. That's the only way to get rid of this logjam.
