This would be a tremendous move for the Magic. I assume he'd replace Hedo who opted out. And if the Magic end up resigning Hedo, than you'd have Hedo, Rashard Vince splitting time with them ocassionally playing small. Defensively though, the Magic would be a joke outside of Dwight.

Not sure but I'd have to assume they are expiring deals or something. I'm sure they are happy to be done with Vince as they've been trying to trade him for a while, but still, you'd think they could have gotten better value, but maybe not. Sets the market for the Tmac sweepstakes.

Here's a better answer
The deal still lacks league approval, but has cleared all hurdles en route to New York offices.
Quick look at the dollars: This is a huge financial commitment from the Orlando Magic. It adds roughly $16 million to their salary commitments for both 2010-11 and 2011-12, when Carter will be approaching 35 years of age. It also adds a little over $2 million to their obligations for 2009-10, which is what will impact the money they have available for Turkoglu.
Remember, they can re-sign Turkoglu with his Bird Rights, but they have previously indicated they would only exceed the Luxury Tax level for the right set of personnel. Are Turkoglu and Carter together the right set?
For the Nets this saves them a little over $2 million in 2009-10 and obviously a ton more in the following two seasons. They can keep Lee for very cheap for three more seasons, and can save even more money should they choose to waive Alston, whose contract is not fully guaranteed.

So basically the Nets are saving a fortune and getting Courtney Lee out of the deal long term. Magic are taking a shot that VC is the guy that puts them over the top. And offensively the Magic would certainly be able to score with VC/Dwight/Rashard/Hedo

After checking, Alston and Battie are about $10 million in 2010 expiring deals and Lee is about $1 million although that's a rookie contract still IIRC. That immediately saves the Nets about $2.9 million next year, and with the number of deals they have ending next year they'd have over $20 million in space before reworking contracts for people or renewing people on the rookie scale. They'll be able to offer Lebron a Max deal, no doubt.

I still have to imagine the Lakers, Knicks, Spurs, Celtics, and Mavs would be right there with them. If Kobe gets the deal reported and they somehow bring back both Lamar and Ariza that will be a MASSIVE payroll.
