Colorado State's Jason Smith might not own the predraft pedigree that Florida's Joakim Noah or China's Yi Jianlian possess.

Even Washington freshman Spencer Hawes, with two fewer seasons of experience than Smith, ranks higher on most draft lists.

But that doesn't mean Smith, the center-power forward who measured 6 feet 11 1/2 inches at the NBA predraft camp in Orlando, hasn't caught the Bulls' attention.

From stellar physical testing in Orlando—he surpassed Noah and Hawes in strength, agility and jumping—to Monday's workout at the Berto Center, Smith has impressed.

He is an interesting option. He's pretty athletic and can score. He can hit jumpers even as far out as the NBA 3-point line (though more effective from top of the key in), and though not quite as deadly inside as Hawes he can score in there. He'd probably be at least on par with Hawes if he had faced better competition in college.

Strength is his major drawback though, he'll likely struggle early inside in the NBA. He'll likely be more of a Euro-style big man for a while: a jump-shooting big with suspect D and rebounding. As of right now he'd also probably be a bit of a reach. He could be a pretty solid fit though, and I'm sure the Bulls will consider him.

The mock drafts around seem to have him mostly going somewhere between 15-20. Just on paper, if we were to get him, I'd prefer it was done in the "Trade down" type mode, because it looks like there's no way he should crack the top 10. I could still see someone (atlanta?) moving up a few spots to take a crack at Conley if he falls.

The more I'm thinking about it, the more I feel that a big man will be traded to Chicago and we can then afford to draft BPA, or that Tyrus Thomas' game will improve by leaps and bounds.

I wouldn't be surprised if he shot up though, athletic big guys typically move up, especially if they're not as well known as some of the other players where teams have had more of a chance to analyze their flaws (not sure why it works that way, it just seems to).

He looks pretty athletic in this clip. I definately like what I see in the video. Definately looks like he has upside. However, I'm worried whether or not he'll be big enough to play PF in the NBA. Everyone in the clip looked smaller but he didn't look that big either. Maybe he'll grow into his body in a few years. I really don't know much about him so it would be hard to tell how good he is defensively.

I'd like to see how he does against Spencer Hawes 1 on 1. If he outperforms him I'd definately be okay with the Bulls taking him over Hawes and possibly taking him at 9 or moving down a couple spots. However, if Yi's there I want the Bulls to take Yi over either player.

For sure. If Yi's there, I don't think there's any way Paxson could or should pass on him. But never say never with the Bulls.
