I was watching the Turkey/Greece game for about a quarter on NBA TV this morning and this was the first I've watched of the international games (I saw a few minutes of the US team and have seen the US highlights of every game).
I was absolutely stunned at the massively poor play I saw. The players looked lost, they were dribbling the ball off there feet and out of bounds, and there was absolutely zero inside game. More shocking was the rule that you can swipe the ball off the rim in international play. Overall I thought I was going to see a fundementally sound style of basketball watching two apparently undefeated teams playing in the tournament but instead I saw a game that was not even close to as fundemental as a top 25 college basketball team would be playing. The teams were organized and it seemed far more like a one on one drill than a shooting drill. So I ask this question, did I watch the wrong game or is this how international play tends to be. If it is international play, I now have zero doubt that the NBA is by far and away the league that collectively has superior talent and fundementals (I knew about the talent part, but had my doubts about the fundementals). |

I'll admit I haven't really watched the games, but I'd imagine that if you watch Spain or Argentina (or to a lesser extent France, not sure how they'll look without Parker) the level of play will be much higher. I know last time (as in the Olympics) Argentina looked pretty impressive.

The states spent two weeks preparing for international play... and there one "scare" was a nine point win against one of the favorites...
International play has improved, but they don't start the kids young enough against good competition... its the same with American soccer... If an American wants there kids to be soccer stars, you send them to europe. If a european wants their kids to be basketball stars... you send them to the states to play in the developmental leagues. |
