Full Version: What Team Would You Like To Own

Without getting into your loyalty to the Bulls or another team, what team would you like to own today and for the next 10 years? Make a case for your decision based on what you things like cap flexibility, current stars, potential for winning titles over the next 10 years stretch, and other things that come to mind. Try to be realistic when taking cap flexibility into account b/c it is not likely that a big time free agent will go to a small market team.

I'd have to go with the Magic at this point. They have everything going for them. They just made it to the finals with a relatively young core and they just added a veteran in Vince Carter that has plenty in the tank and fills the go to scorer role they needed from the SG position. Vince is on the books for two more years (team option for the 3rd) which means his massive $17M will be available to add to the championship puzzle. Dwight is a freak of nature and will dominate the center position (barring injury) for the next 8-10 years. I really like that their cap space is mainly taken up by all-star caliber players and that Lewis's big contract will come of the books the same year that Dwight's extension goes into effect. That means that they'll have the opportunity to pair Dwight up with other stars down the road while going for it all now. They also have Nelson signed relatively cheap for the next 4 seasons.

Orlando also is a destination that will attract future stars. It's a big enough market and it is always nice to play in Florida. It probably does not have the appeal of Miami but playing next to Dwight is enough appeal. That appeal was evidenced by all the mid-low level free agents that flocked to Orlando this off-season in an attempt to be on a winning team.

Dwight - Turns 24 this year
Nelson - Turns 28 next Feb
Lewis - Turns 30 this year
Gortat - Turns 26 in Feb

If the Magic were not in a position to win the next 3 titles I would have to go with either the Thunder, Blazers in terms of teams I'd want to own. I believe the Thunder are up and coming. Both the Blazers and Thunder have good/great young talent at every position. And the Thunder have Durant who is really young and is a special franchise type player.

I'd then go with the Bulls. As much as I do not like our management staff and their ability to put together a title we did luck into Rose which in itself is enough to make a big market like Chicago marketable again. smile.gif Rose is a special franchise talent and if the Bulls can pair him with another star they will be in title contention for years to come. Chicago has good young talent for potential trades and cap flexibility to sign a great free agent. Noah/Tyrus/Deng (and hopefully Johnson) make up a very nice young core to build upon with Kirk handling the dirty work. Salmon's is underpaid in the short term compared to the production he gives you. If Asik comes over and is a good defensive center off the bench or more we'll have a very nice lineup to work with going into 2010 and beyond.

The Bulls young core leaves plenty of room for a dynasty.
Noah - 25 in Feb
Tyrus - 23 in Aug
Asik - 23 (Jul 4th birthday)
Rose - 21 in Oct
Johnson - 23 in Feb
Deng - 25 in Apr
Kirk - 29 in Jan
Salmons - 30 in Dec

i'd rather build a team up from scratch than walk in to a good situation

The Bulls

Guaranteed sell-outs + Derrick Rose in a market salivating for someone who cares.

New Jersey.

Ton of young talent on that team. They could be real tough in a year or so, could even see them making playoffs this year.

Devin Harris
Courtney Lee
Brook Lopez
Terrence Williams
Yi Jianlian
Chris Douglas Roberts
Josh Boone

They do have some decent young talent but if they make the playoffs the Bulls will have even less of a chance of making it. They have a lot of young unproven talent that may become busts. Boone, Williams, Yi all could be in the bust category. But the somewhat large market is nice.

If I'm going for young talent I'm going with Durant, Westrbrook, Green, Mullens, Ibaka, Harden, Thabo, Livingston, White, Swift & Vaden (all of whom are 24 years old or younger). I think the Thunder have a much better shot of making the playoffs than the Nets. I'd swap lineups with the Thunder any day.

Title was what team would you like to own. Yes, I know if Jersey made the playoffs the Bulls most likely wouldn't. I did not take that into account since I would root for the team I would want to own presumably.

OKC has talent and I thought about them but then I took into account market size and New Jersey fits the bill there and I feel their players are more polished and better balance of talent.

It is your opinion and the Devin Harris trade was a steal. But unfortunately those 1st round picks they got as part of the deal won't pay off big time. The Thunder however own the Suns 1st round pick next year(unprotected) and the stars are aligning for the Suns to miss the playoffs. No Shaq, no big free agent add, and an ever improving West means the Thunder might luck into a very nice pick in addition to their own mid-1st rd. pick (b/c they will be much improved this year). Harris is very good (though injury prone) but isn't close to Durant on talent or his overall potential. Durant by himself is enough reason for me to choose the Thunder over the Nets. If I were going to make the market case and potential case, I'd take the Bulls over NJ any day. Couple Durant (an unselfish superstar) with the talent they have, cap room to add the center they are looking for (Bosh or Amare), and 5 draft picks to work with in next years draft and watch out.

Here's my position breakdown: (Let me know if you significantly disagree with any)

PG (Advantage Nets temporarily): Westbrook has the potential to be better than Harris. Plus they have Livingston trying to revive his career in the background.

SG (Advantage Thunder by a ways): Harden is better than Lee though I am still high on Lee's potential (thought he was a steal last year). I was high on CDR coming out of college but he didn't show me enough last year to prove that he can become a reliable starter. Thabo off the bench defensively pushes this category even more in favor of the Thunder.

SF (Advantage Thunder by a mile): Durant is better than Terrance Williams by a mile (no need to talk about Hassell, Hayes, Najera, or Simmons). Williams is a sick athlete that can't shoot but can play D. Will he ever be an Artest type lockdown defender. Or better yet will he improve enough offensively to allow him minutes on the floor to be a specialist on defense.

PF (Advantage Thunder now with potential for landslide going forward in Ibaka): Green is really a SF playing PF but his potential and trade value is higher than any 3 or 4 on the Nets (Yi included). Plus, I'd much rather have Serge Ibaka (who's a stud in the making), DJ White, & Green playing PF than Yi, Boone, Battie, Williams

C (Advantage Nets): Lopez is really the only clear cut advantage the Nets have long term at any position but that's only if Mullen's doesn't develop (b/c I think his potential is higher). Lopez put up good stats as a rookie but he's no 2nd coming of Duncan and don't let anyone convince you otherwise. Krstic/Collison/Mullens make up a decent C spot for the Thunder but it's definitely a position they'll be looking to fill via free agency, the draft, or trade going into the 2011 season. I could see Green being packaged with Collison to bring a big time name to town.

I don't say he'll be way better but I do think that his potential ceiling is much higher b/c he reminds of a Gary Payton type PG. He's big, can score, rebounds very well, can pass, is more explosive than Harris, and has all the makings of a lockdown defender at the PG. I took Harris 4 years in the league to get to the production level that Westbrook had in his rookie year (FG% not included) and he's never been a strong rebounder even though he has the size. Harris took a big step forward last year but he'll need to build on that. The sky is the limit for Westbrook. He obviously must improve his shooting significantly but I think he can be a very good scorer and distributor while being a much better defender than Harris.

For as good of a year as Harris had, he didn't finish with numbers that were that impressive. His 21.3 ppg were nice but with his speed he should have shot much better than 43.8%. That's what he shot the last 2 seasons. He obviously is relying too much on his 3 point shot which to date just isn't there (29% last year and career 31%).

New Jersey.

Am I allowed to keep Jay-Z on staff such that I have a legit shot @ Lebron?
