Kevin Love tired of waiting for Timberwolves to get good

Kurt Helin

Teams rarely become good overnight in the NBA. They build it up over time — think of the Thunder model, who took steps forward every season the past three years. What Miami did is the aberration.

Minnesota could be one of those teams on the rise, but Kevin Love wants management to speed up the process.

Love is in Las Vegas for Team USA camp and being around guys like that — many of them teammates — has Love frustrated, he told Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports.

“My patience is not high,” Love said. “Would yours be, especially when I’m a big proponent of greatness surrounding itself with greatness? All these [Team USA] guys seem to have great players around them.

“It’s tough seeing all these guys that are young and older who have all played in the playoffs. When they start talking about that, I have nothing to talk about. If I don’t make the playoffs next year I don’t know what will happen.”

Nothing. That’s what will happen.

Next season you start your first deal after your rookie and you’ll make $12.9 million and $62 million total over the next four. Now, you can opt out after season three and you did that to keep pressure on Minnesota management — a smart move — but basing what you will do in three years off what happens next season is foolish.

And you should be on an improved team next year. Ricky Rubio will return from his knee injury (at some point) and you’ll have a star young point guard again. Chase Budinger provides some athleticism. Management added Brandon Roy, which has some upside. Derrick Williams should improve.

And you should be a borderline playoff team under Rick Adelman. If Love wants to make sure Minnesota makes the playoffs, he should spend this offseason improving his defense.

But speaking out now and again to keep pressure on management? Good strategy.
Chicago Bulls Franchise
This would be the one guy the Bulls should be putting all their pieces in order for in the summer of 2014 when he may demand a trade going into the final year of his contract with Minnesota. He's good friends with Derrick and I think he'd consider coming here, but the Bulls track record hasn't been very good with reeling in the big time Free Agents for whatever reason. I do think Rose has to step up though and be more vocal about some guys. I know it's not in his nature but he's never going to get anywhere without another star quality player next to him, especially if NJ is about to form a super-team of their own, right alongside Miami. The Bulls clearly need more ammo to get over the hump and Kevin Love is the guy I'd love to have.

OKC scares me though as the team that Kevin Love would most like to go to, followed by the Lakers or the Bulls. He's said in the past that he talks with DRose and Westbrook about teaming up together one day and the Thunder have the trump card over the Bulls in any sign and trade that involve him. James Harden will likely be on a max contract and Ibaka will be awfully close. OKC could actually save money by consolodating their money into one player, and that's important for a small market team. Harden + Ibaka for Kevin Love might make sense if KLove announces that OKC is his prime destination.

If not, the Bulls could trade Noah, the Charlotte pick, their own first rounders, and possibly the rights to Mirotic and whatever else if need be for Love. 2014 will be the year the Bulls will again be able to re-tool around Derrick with Deng's contract coming off the books and Boozer likely an amnesty candidate.

f*** it, let's do it now. No need to wait for them to stumble in the playoffs and make him happy.

The only way it happens if Love wants it to happen. Rose needs to get on this, like yesterday.

It would be tough for us to know for sure if it's happening.

Rose may be doing it, but decent people (Love perhaps) will have an emotional attachment to the team that drafted them and won't take leaving them lightly and certainly may not want to do it in a Howard-esque manner. If Love is more like Bron Bron, then some text messages might do the trick wink.gif

Nothing is going to happen any time soon. He's still under contract for 3 more seasons before he cap opt out. The T-Wolves aren't even going to think about it for 2 more years.

If it was a real big deal to him he could issue a trade demand and actually force things, but then that's not going to do much for his reputation.

When's love a FA? We'll have expirings for a few years in Booz, Deng, and (maybe) Asik. We might have Mirotic and the Bobcats pick to entice a trade.

Signed a 4 year extension last season with an opt-out after 3 years that he could use after 2014/2015. So...3 full seasons.

So, around when Booz should expire?

Which means its so far away that unless he issues a trade demand and sits his tail down in protest, there's no way he's anywhere close to on the trading block and we need to look elsewhere.
